Robert Downey Jr is ready to say goodbye to Iron Man

All good things must come to an end. It’s an inevitable truth that we cannot escape, even for a powerhouse like Marvel Studios.

Speaking recently ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel godfather Robert Downey Jr spilled the news we’d all been dreading to hear, but knew would eventually come.

After more than 10 years as Iron Man, RDJ has spoken of his plans to close the door on his most iconic role before fans start to get sick of him.

It’s this cyclical thing. I could have said when the first Avengers came out: ‘It’s never going to get any better than that. Everybody stop.’ But to me it’s always about people and opportunities, like the (Avengers directors Anthony and Joe) Russos, who I adore. Everyone says to me it’s like a glove that fits so well. I have to start over every time but I am starting over with a pretty solid base. I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven (MCU movies) I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing.

You can’t blame the guy really. When you’re at the top of your game there’s only one direction left to go it, and that’s back down.

RDJ has had a crucial role in building the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the worldwide box office phenomenon it is today, and if he decides to hang up his famous genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist persona then he can rest assured his legacy will continue to carry on through new emerging talent.

Will RDJ be one of the casualties of Avengers: Infinity War? Guess we’ll just have to wait and see when it hits cinemas worldwide next year.
