With it’s DC Cinematic Universe in deep water at the moment, Warner Bros Pictures are making their recently announced Man of Steel sequel a high priority, pushing the project through as quickly as possible in the hopes of resurrecting the flagging universe – and when it comes to directors, the shortlist is surprising to say the least.
Among the leading filmmakers to make the shortlist, are J.J. Abrams, Doug Liman and perhaps more surprising, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead visionary Edgar Wright, who publicly walked away from Marvel’s Ant-Man last year.
Now it’s worth pointing out that both Doug Liman is very busy guy at the moment, overseeing several projects including the sequel to Edge of Tomorrow and 20th Century Fox’s hotly anticipated Gambit spinoff, so is highly likely to pass on the opportunity if offered.
Abrams and Wright in the other hand both look to have flexibility in their directing schedules so could be tempted by Warner Bros – though with Abrams phenomenal success in relaunching Star Trek and Star Wars, he won’t come cheap to the studio, which may see Edgar Wright emerge as the favourite.
Man of Steel 2 is been given a very tight October 2018 release, which may result in the list of eligible directors shrink considerably over the next few months, though with Warner Bros Pictures likely to bulk out the blockbusters budget as it attempts to salvage it’s cinematic universe, directors should be queuing up to take the helm.
